ABOUT US
Trust the People is a movement of community builders committed to building a real democracy from the grassroots up. We aim to harness the power of community organising to help solve our most pressing challenges.Â
Our democracy is broken, our society unequal and our relationship with the natural world, fragile. Through community building, conflict resolution and participatory democracy, we know that we can create something better.
In March 2020, the world shut down and many of us had a chance to think about our way of life. Amidst the grief, loneliness and anxiety, we turned to our neighbours and found not only comfort but a strong foundation for support. We believe that through taking agency in our own neighbourhoods, we can collectively create a society that meets the needs of all and leaves no one behind.
The movement was born in Extinction Rebellion's Future Democracy Hub, but it now extends far beyond, and works with other organisations across the UK also seeking to transform the world we live in, notably Flatpack Democracy and Climate Emergency Centres.
THE PLAN
Share skills and resources for community building for free;
Create a network of self-supporting community organisers, who share ideas, stories and skills;
Support people to support themselves and their communities;
Facilitate the creation of democratic communities where local people use deliberative democratic tools to make decisions together;
Help create a society which looks after the needs of the people and the planet.
THE ACTION
A free learning programme, available to all, with around 1200 graduates so far;
New initiatives taking off all over the country, from Community Centres to Community Assemblies;
A network of course graduates, community builders and supporters, talking and supporting each other around the UK (and beyond!);
Facilitation support for People's Assemblies, on demand;
An inclusive, welcoming and inspiring team of volunteers, holding it all together.
